Bring Back the CES
The Albanese Government

Back in 1998, the Howard Government made the regrettable decision to privatise the Commonwealth Employment Services (CES). They promised competition and improved services, but the reality has been quite the opposite. A small number of multinational corporations now dominate the employment services sector, reaping massive profits while failing to deliver on their obligations to job seekers

We write this petition to urge the government to take immediate action and commit to the renationalisation of the Commonwealth Employment Services (CES). It is imperative that we address the shortcomings of the current system and ensure better support for job seekers across the country.
We believe the following actions are necessary to bring about positive change:
Suspension of Mutual Obligations: We call for the immediate suspension of mutual obligations, acknowledging their punitive nature. These obligations often do more harm than good and create unnecessary barriers for job seekers.
End Use of For-Profit Employment Services: We request an in-principle decision to terminate the use of for-profit employment services due to the inherent conflict of interest. The focus should be on providing quality services to job seekers, not maximizing profits for private corporations.
Rebuilding a Public Sector-Based Employment Service: We urge the government to make an in-principle decision to rebuild a public sector-based employment service. This will ensure transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to serving the interests of job seekers.
Exploring a Modern CES Model: We advocate for the exploration and development of a new modern CES model, supported by specialist community-based services. This approach will provide enhanced support to jobseekers and help rebuild the skills and capacity of the Australian Public Service.
Increasing Entry-Level Jobs in the Australian Public Service: We call for measures to increase the number, range, and location of entry-level jobs within the Australian Public Service. This will create more opportunities for job seekers and contribute to a stronger economy.
By taking these actions, the government can demonstrate its commitment to fair and effective employment services that prioritise the needs of job seekers and contribute to a more prosperous society.
We implore you to consider our petition and take the necessary steps to renationalise the Commonwealth Employment Services and implement the recommended actions outlined above. Together, we can build a system that provides genuine support and opportunities for all job seekers in Australia.
