I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren: When big banks break the law, they should be held accountable. If mega-bank HSBC is found to have helped corporations illegally hide money and avoid taxes, it should face criminal charges. No one bank should be "too big to jail."

Mega-bank HSBC -- which made billions in profits last year -- is under investigation for helping its millionaire clients and corporations illegally evade taxes, and the U.S. Department of Justice is considering filing criminal charges. This would be a huge step forward for anyone who believes that big banks that break the law should be held accountable.

This is the same bank that was caught laundering drug money for Mexican and Columbian drug cartels in 2014. For that crime, not a single banker went to trial, let alone to jail.

In response to these new allegations, Senator Elizabeth Warren said:

“The government comes down hard on individuals who break the law time after time, and it should do the same for large financial institutions. The new allegations that HSBC colluded to help wealthy people and rich corporations hide money and avoid taxes are very serious, and, if true, the Department of Justice should reconsider the earlier deferred prosecution agreement it entered into with HSBC and prosecute the new violations to the full extent of the law.”

No one should be above the law. If you steal a hundred bucks on Main Street, you're probably going to jail. If you steal a billion dollars on Wall Street, you should go to jail too. If you agree, add your name.
