Call for a moratorium on new road widening/ building schemes in Kirklees

Strategic Planning Committee, Kirklees Council

Join Save the Trees Kirklees and Huddersfield Friends of the Earth in calling for a moratorium on all new major road schemes in Kirklees until their climate and ecological impact has been fully assessed.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) is undertaking a Climate Impact Audit of some West Yorkshire road schemes in the pipeline. We want ALL Kirklees major road schemes to be included in that process, including the proposed road widening scheme on the A629.

We ask Kirklees Council:
- That all major Kirklees road schemes are included in the WYCA Carbon Impact Audit and are reviewed against the Climate Emergency declaration and CERP study.
- For a moratorium of all Kirklees major road schemes until the full carbon impact can be determined.
- That Kirklees Council commits to protecting all existing trees on the A629 route.
- That Kirklees Council reconsiders all its proposed major road schemes with reference to its climate emergency commitment.
