Stop Greenwashing Genocide— Canadian Institutions Withdraw from COP29 Now

Canadian Institutions Complicit in Genocide Greenwashing

Canadian institutions are complicit in greenwashing the Artsakh genocide of 2023 by sending delegations to COP29, hosted this year by the petro-dictatorship of Azerbaijan—a regime responsible for wiping out an entire Armenian community from its ancestral lands. We cannot remain silent in the face of looming existential threats to Armenia by the Azerbaijani regime, which is using COP29 as a platform to greenwash and legitimize its past and ongoing genocidal actions. This includes the planned invasion of Armenia, as openly stated by the Azeri so-called president: 'If the ethnic Armenians do not leave our lands of their own free will, we will chase them away like dogs, and we're doing that.' (Note that 'our lands' refers to all of Armenia's sovereign lands). Azerbaijan is currently holding dozens of Armenian hostages, illegally occupies 250 km² of Armenia's land, and coerces the Armenian government with expansionist demands while heavily arming itself for the planned invasion. What's more, fossil fuels make up 90% of Azerbaijan's exports; is this really the country that should be hosting COP29 this year?

Canada has a long history of backing genocidal regimes—this impunity must stop now. All forms of imperialism should be scrutinized, not just the trendy ones; Armenians matter too. We need your urgent support by signing this petition and participating in our email campaign to pressure Canadian institutions to withdraw from and condemn COP29 immediately.

Greetings,

It has come to my attention that your institution is sending a delegation to COP29 in Baku. I implore you to withdraw your participation and instead lead by example in standing against this genocide greenwashing convention.

Azerbaijan has a deplorable record of human rights violations, crimes against humanity, and severe environmental damage. As recently as last year, more than 120,000 indigenous Armenians fled their ancestral lands of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) after a nine-month-long inhumane blockade, which culminated in an indiscriminate massacre on September 19, 2023. According to the Genocide Convention adopted by the UN, genocide is defined as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group," including actions such as killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately inflicting living conditions intended to bring about the group's physical destruction. Azerbaijan's conduct clearly falls within this definition and has been widely condemned by leading human rights organizations and international bodies. If any additional clarity is needed, Azerbaijan’s president, Aliyev, has stated, 'If the ethnic Armenians do not leave our lands of their own free will, we will chase them away like dogs, and we are doing that.' What's more, fossil fuels make up 90% of Azerbaijan's exports; is this really the country that should be hosting COP29 this year?

In light of this, I strongly urge you to:

-Withdraw from COP29 immediately.
- Publicly condemn the event as an endorsement of actions that contravene fundamental human rights and environmental principles. In your condemnation, you're highly encouraged to express support for:

1. The immediate release of all Armenian prisoners of war and hostages.
2. The guaranteed right for indigenous Armenians to return to and live safely in their ancestral lands in Artsakh.
3. An agreement free from expansionist demands and the return of 250 km² of internationally recognized Armenian territories under Azeri occupation.

We will not stay silent in the face of the existential threats to Armenia posed by the Azerbaijani regime, which is exploiting COP29 as a platform to legitimize its past and ongoing genocidal actions before the international community. This impunity must end now. I hope you will choose to raise our voice rather than be complicit.

I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your response.
