Connecticut candidates for state office

Connecticut state candidates are traveling across the state to talk with voters about what they want to see coming out of Hartford, making now the perfect time to ask them to sign a pledge in support of electing the President by national popular vote.

Connecticut voters support joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC), and candidates for state office here should as well.

The NPVIC is a simple solution to the presidential election process which currently prioritizes voters in a few “swing” states while silencing the rest of us. The basic concept of the NPVIC is getting enough states to pass laws that will give their electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote, thus making sure that in the future whoever wins the most votes nationwide will always become President

Once in place, NPVIC would benefit voters in red, blue and purple states because every single vote cast for president would matter. By joining the NPVIC, Connecticut voters would finally have a say in who becomes president. Presidential candidates would have to address our concerns, instead of focusing only on a few swing states.

So far, 10 states and the District of Columbia — totaling 165 electoral votes — have joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. We're more than halfway to the 270 electoral votes needed for the Compact to take effect. When Connecticut joins we will add our 7 electoral votes, bringing the total in support of the NPVIC to 172.

This isn't a big ask. Candidates signing the pledge won't be taking an extreme stance. The measure has been received favorably in the CT General Assembly since 2009. The 2017 NPVIC bill — H.B. 5434 — fell just a few votes short of passing with 68 co-sponsors (more than ever before) and an unprecedented grassroots effort supporting it. The more candidates that pledge to support the NPVIC, the closer we'll get to passing the Compact and electing the presidential candidate who gets the most votes in all 50 states.
