Governor Baker, MA BOARD OF PAROLE
Dear Governor Baker,
Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls urges you to use your clemency power. Clemency is the only avenue that incarcerated women who are serving life or long sentences have to be reunited with their families. We are demanding The Board of Parole begin recommending people for clemency and Governor Baker grant clemency to all women over 50 years old and women who have served 10 years or more. It is urgent that these women are immediately released because they pose no threat to public safety. Women have received longer and harsher sentencing, Clemency is a racial justice issue and is a tool to correct systemic racism. We are positioned to provide you with a list of women that are currently incarcerated and if granted clemency can return to their community to begin their healing journey. Massachusetts does not have the death penalty, however we have one of the highest numbers of women serving life. This means women are spending decades in prison and dying. Releasing our women amongst the criteria listed above, would be fiscally responsible and would pose no threat to our community.
During this pandemic, almost half of incarcerated women at M.C.I. Framingham tested positive for Covid. Medical experts across the state have recommended decarceration. Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls demand that the Governor use his power to grant clemency to women who are elderly, survived and punished, medically infirmed and long-timers who have already served at least ten years.
We are urging the release of women now. We are aware of women whose clemency applications have not been submitted for review/recommendation. These women have a community positioned to support their immediate release. It is time that you do what is morally right and release these women from prison. Some of these women have spent over 30 years in prison. It is time they get a second chance with their loved ones.
