Condemn Johnny Gardner and Horry County Council for rescinding the June Pride Proclamation
Johnny Gardner, Chairman and Horry County Council, Brenda Bethune, Myrtle Beach Mayor

Grand Strand Action Together is disheartened to learn that the Horry County Council decided to rescind the June Pride Proclamation. LGBTQ+ individuals are in our community, and after decades of discrimination, judgment, and oppression, they deserve to be celebrated and recognized for who they are and also for their contributions to our community and society at large. We condemn the council for catering to a small section of their constituents who want to sow division in our community. Being united means accepting everyone as they are, and rescinding this Pride Proclamation does the exact opposite of that. Also, while we know that Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune had nothing to do with this and has usually been an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, we would encourage her to use her voice and her platform to put pressure on the county council and at the very least, join us in condemning this unfortunate action.
We stand with Grand Strand Pride, T-Time Myrtle Beach, and Pride Myrtle Beach as well as many other pro-LGTBQ+ organizations, and we hope you will join us.

Pride Month is to be celebrated after the decades of discrimination, judgment, and oppression LGBTQ+ individuals have faced. To serve only one small part of our community who is only focused on hatred and division is not acceptable. Do your jobs and make this a community that is inclusive for all.
