Costco: Instacart workers do the heavy lifting for you, but we're not getting paid what we’re worth. Stand with workers and #DeleteInstacart.

Costco CEO Craig Jelinek

Thousands of Instacart workers across the country are mobilizing in response to the company’s years of pay cuts, shady behavior, and unfair treatment. They're making themselves heard loud & clear, but Instacart is still refusing to listen. That's why we're asking Costco, a key Instacart partner, to stand with us — get Instacart to treat its workers better and meet the demand for a 10% default tip, or #DeleteInstacart.

Costco's partnership with Instacart is an important one for both companies. Costco orders make up 24% of Instacart’s sales. Last year, the companies expanded their partnership to all Costco locations nationwide.

Costco members value the fact that Costco offers frontline employees good pay and benefits, but Instacart shoppers are doing work for your company and your customers too — and for shoppers, Costco is far from a good workplace. While both Costco & Instacart rake in millions of dollars on orders, Instacart shoppers are the ones doing the heavy lifting — literally — and they're not getting much out of it. They're getting paid subminimum wages for huge orders that can take hours to shop and deliver, they're putting extreme wear and tear on their cars and on their bodies, and they're risking injury to deliver your products.

And it’s gotten worse. Last year, Instacart cut overall pay by about 30% — and started stealing tips meant for workers by lowering their payout on orders with higher tips. Thousands of workers organized, and the company stopped stealing tips under intense pressure. But pay remains obscenely low — just $7.66 per hour after expenses.

Then this month, Instacart workers organized a three-day strike with a simple demand that would cost the company nothing: increasing the suggested default tip for customers from 5% to 10%. And Instacart responded...by cutting pay yet again immediately after the strike, removing the $3 “quality bonus” for jobs that customers rate 5 stars. They’re trying to scare us off. But we aren’t going anywhere.

Instacart has become notorious for this kind of behavior. It’s hard to see how Costco can maintain its positive reputation for workers if the company continues to ramp up its partnership with Instacart while doing nothing to address the way workers in Costco stores, delivering orders to Costco customers, are being treated.

In the wake of Instacart’s retaliation against protesting workers, thousands of customers & workers are speaking out. But it STILL isn’t enough to make Instacart listen. That's why we're calling on Costco to stand with us. You can use your power as a key partner to push Instacart to improve our working conditions and meet workers’ demand for a 10% default tip, or you can #DeleteInstacart by ending your partnership.

Your reputation — and Instacart workers' jobs — depend on it.
