Fund the Future- Save Student Facing Positions in New Hanover County Schools

New Hanover County School Board and County Commissioners

The superintendent has presented the possibility of cutting 279 student facing positions within our county for the 24-25 school year. We are demanding the school board vote no to any budget that cuts these positions and that the county commission provide at least $12 million dollars to the schools in order to save these positions. We must fund the future for our students!

The next campaign event is a Teacher Donation Drive at Walmart on Sigmon Rd on April 20th from 10-4. Bring items requested by local teachers in schools that need the supplies the most. These supplies will help make it safely through the rest of their school year. Supplies include: disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray, hand sanitizer, paper towels, band-aids, tissues, and liquid soap.

These reductions will immeasurably impact the academic gains and personal safety of every student in New Hanover County schools. This is unacceptable. These
positions would impact thousands of students served by cutting classroom teachers, special education services, and academically gifted services. Students would also have less access to vital services such as counseling. Families will be faced with the lack of resources provided by social workers.

We, the undersigned, are calling on the New Hanover Board of Education and County Commission to approve a balanced budget for the 24-25 school year that INCLUDES a $12 million supplement of expired ESSER Funds to save: The 279 student-facing positions (These are Teachers, Nurses, Special Education TAs, Social Workers, Counselors, and Academic Interventionists) that are proposed to be cut while our schools are already underserved!
