As a resident or visitor to Sea Cliff, New York, I ask the Village of Sea Cliff, NY to create a Reusable Bag Ordinance. It could eliminate plastic checkout bags at most food retailers, with a small fee on recycled paper, or a fee on all bags.
As a premiere place to live, shop, and visit, Sea Cliff should address this issue and join the seven other municipalities on Long Island, and hundreds of towns, cities and states who have already passed similar reusable bag legislation.
Plastic bag pollution is an eyesore and damages our natural surroundings. It clogs storm drains, never biodegrades; costs taxpayers to clean up and store in landfills; harms wildlife, and is made of non-renewable dirty fossil fuels.
Nearly all loose plastic in our neighborhood will end up in our waters through those storm drains or runoff, polluting our local waters and contributing to the plastic patches in the ocean. Recycling it is a toxic and expensive process and not a viable solution, with less than 10% recycled worldwide.
To protect our waters and environment, I pledge to bring my own reusable bags instead!
