Declare Independence: Build PPE at Home
President of the United States
UNAC/UHCP is calling on the President of the United States to invoke the Defense Production Act to manufacture desperately needed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at home. Join us by signing our petition below.
Cases are climbing
The existing worldwide supply of N95 masks is estimated at 1/10th to 1/15th of what will be needed as new cases set daily records and flu season and fire season approach.
N95 masks are critical not just in hospitals, but for firefighters, EMTs, in schools, skilled nursing facilities, and for other essential workers—all competing for the same scarce supplies, while U.S. factories lie dormant and most of the world’s PPE is manufactured overseas.
Large-scale domestic production is needed
The President could solve the PPE problem right now by invoking the Defense Production Act (DPA). The tremendous manufacturing power of the United States could be quickly marshalled to churn out massive amounts of PPE for rapid distribution across the country.
Great presidents have used this power many times in the past to meet grave national needs, in war and peacetime both. The current president has used it thousands of times to manufacture military drones, chemicals for missiles, and body armor for border patrol agents.
COVID-19 now attacks more than 55,000 Americans every day and has already killed more than 128,000.
Without a coordinated national strategy to produce PPE, our hospitals, and state and local governments, are left to scrape, scramble and compete against each for a dwindling supply.
Sadly, this issue has become politicized. The health and safety of nurses, health care professionals, our patients and the public should not be political.
Instead, we must unite in patriotism and purpose to beat this disease and save lives. The power to fix this lies squarely in the President’s hands. We call on his sense of duty to the American public to use it.

Registered nurses and other health care workers are risking their lives to protect others as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to escalate. We will be battling COVID-19 for many months, even years, to come.
Put our nation’s health first. Trigger the Defense Production Act immediately to accelerate and expand production of desperately-needed PPE, so we can be armed and equipped in our war against this virus, to save lives and keep Americans working.
