Decriminalize Cannabis Morgantown

Morgantown City Councilors

The Truth About Cannabis

We have Bigger Problems: Our police and courts have limited resources, and they should focus on more serious issues than personal use of cannabis. Cannabis is less harmful than the harsh drug penalties that lead to overcrowded jails, families torn apart, and shattered communities.

Mountaineers are Always Free: Cannabis prohibition is an unnecessary government intrusion into our personal lives.

Cannabis Enforcement is Discriminatory: Minorities and the poor are disproportionately charged with possession.

Prohibition Doesn't Work: Criminalizing cannabis does not deter use, and decriminalizing will not increase use. Opiate abuse falls in places where cannabis is legal. Cannabis is less harmful than alcohol and tobacco, both of which are legal.

It's Our Turn: Other states are leading the way and improving the lives of their citizens. It's past time for the end of marijuana prohibition in West Virginia. Why should we be left behind?

Decriminalize Cannabis, Morgantown!

Whereas cannabis prohibition harms our citizens and our communities, and is an unnecessary intrusion on West Virginians' freedom and a drain on our government and economy,

We, the undersigned, request the Morgantown City Council to promptly adopt the Model Cannabis Decriminalization Bill developed by the WV ACLU to decriminalize cannabis.
