Defend the Equality Act and protect trans rights!

Liz Truss and Boris Johnson

The Government promised in 2017 to modernise the process for trans people to change their legal gender. The current system is intrusive and bureaucratic, placing it out of reach for many.

However, instead of delivering on its promise, the Government now seems to have decided to scrap reform completely. This is despite 70% of respondents to the government's consultation expressing support for much-needed change, and the success of similar reforms in many other countries including Ireland.

Instead Boris Johnson and Liz Truss have decided to attack the rights that trans people currently have under the 2010 Equality Act to use facilities that correspond with their gender. They and their allies in the media are stoking unfounded public fears about “threats” posed by trans people, who are in reality a marginalised community.

We remember Riah Milton and Dominique “Rem'Mie” Fells, two Black trans women who were murdered in the USA just last week. We remember the life of Naomi Hersi. Transphobia kills.

Transphobia in society is all too widespread. It is shocking that this Conservative government is moving to rip up promised reforms and instead undermine the standing of trans people in society.

We call on Boris Johnson and Liz Truss to:

Deliver on the Government’s promise to reform the Gender Recognition Act

Leave the Equality Act alone

Condemn the media’s scaremongering about trans people

We will not stand by and allow the biggest attack on LGBTIQA+ rights in three decades.
