Tell HISD Board of Managers to Return Our Defined Workday & Extra Pay

Houston ISD Board of Managers and Superintendent Mike Miles

Supt. Mike Miles and the Board of Managers eliminated educators’ "defined workday.” The former policy provided educators extra pay for duties performed beyond their 7.75 hour workday. A defined workday was a policy won by HFT members years ago. Now, educators can be assigned additional duties and activities with no guarantee that they will receive compensation. This is a huge step backwards for our district.

According to the 22-23 Compensation Manual, "Professionals paid on the Teacher Initial Compensation Placement Table who have assignments beyond the regular day during the school year shall be paid at the standard rate of $25 per hour for additional time worked." This language has been updated to state, "Professionals paid on the Teacher Initial Compensation Placement Table who have assignments beyond the normal course and scope of their duties may be paid at the standard rate of $25 per hour for the additional time worked." In addition, the new language in the 23-24 Compensation Manual states that Extra Duty Pay is paid at the supervisor's discretion. Lastly, language regarding a 7.5 hour workday have also been removed.

Educators signed contracts prior to the adoption of the 23-24 Compensation Manual, and were provided information at the beginning of the year that their contracts would follow provisions of the 22-23 manual. However, we have learned quickly that Supt. Mike Miles and the Board of Managers have made many changes that are not in the best interests of employees and students.

Enough is enough! Sign our petition to urge Supt. Mike Miles and the Board of Managers to restore language that guarantees a defined workday and extra pay for Houston ISD educators. It is time to put teachers and students first.

Changes to the 23-24 Compensation Manual take big steps backwards in regards to respecting the time and talent of our district's educators. For years, Houston ISD has been the leading district that provided educators with a defined workday of 7.75 hours with extra pay provisions for duties performed beyond the scope of the workday.

A defined workday is what helped Houston ISD standout as an employer of choice. Now, the new compensation manual eliminates language that guarantees a defined workday along with extra pay. This is a slap in the face to all educators who signed their contracts prior to the September adoption of the 23-24 Compensation Manual.

We urge you to restore language that provides guarantees for a defined workday and extra pay. Now is the time to respect the hardworking educators in HISD.
