Demand the cost-of-living raise the workers of UF are owed this year

University of Florida Board of Trustees, President Ben Sasse

We, the undersigned, urge Ben Sasse and the University of Florida Board of Trustees to approve a 7% across-the-board pay raise for all UF employees, no matter their job classification or hours worked.

The Board of Trustees gave high-paid administrators an 8.2% raise in the 2018-2021 period. We’re always hearing about new opportunities coming to UF, and watching shiny new buildings go up around campus.

We know UF has resources and the ability to give every employee an across-the-board pay raise and we deserve to keep pace with the inflation we are experiencing. If the University wants to attract and retain world-class faculty, staff, and students, it must support all employees - from administration staff and adjuncts to custodians and veterinary technicians - particularly in a rapidly changing economy in a high growth state.

We, the undersigned, urge Ben Sasse and the University of Florida Board of Governors to approve a 7% across-the-board pay raise for all UF employees, no matter their job classification or hours worked.

- Point 1: We deserve pay that keeps pace with inflation. It has been reported by many reputable sources (CNBC, WSJ, etc.) that as of Jan. 12 2022 the rate of inflation has risen by 7% over the past year, the highest it has been since 1982. Inflation has impacted every employee negatively, and it impacts workers at the bottom even more. We call on UF to enact a universal 7% across-the-board permanent pay raise for all staff.

- Point 2: In 2021 UF gave us a 3% raise, which fell short of inflation by 2.4%. However, this shortfall was greater for some than for others because the University allowed each department to tie the raises to individual job performance, making it a merit raise instead of a cost-of-living raise as should have been granted properly. Some people therefore received less than the promised 3% raise, making their shortfall potentially as much as the full 5.4% of inflation. It is our right as employees to be compensated for our work commensurate with the cost of living in our area, so when the cost of living goes up, the cost of our labor goes up as well. As it stands now, the University has failed in their duty to properly compensate us, the workers, for our labor and have instead stolen millions of dollars that should have been ours. We call on UF to make this right by instituting a proper cost of living raise commensurate with the current rate of inflation.

-Point 3: We’re always hearing about new opportunities coming to UF, and watching shiny new buildings go up around campus. The Board of Trustees gave administrators an 8.2% raise in the 2018-2021 period. We know UF has the resources and ability to give every employee an across-the-board pay raise to keep pace with the inflation workers are experiencing. If the University wants to attract and retain world-class faculty, staff, and students, it must support all its employees - from administration staff and adjuncts to custodians and veterinary technicians - particularly in a rapidly changing economy in a high growth state.
