DOJ: Investigate Tamir Rice's Murder

Loretta Lynch, Attorney General

In November 2014, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot by police at his neighborhood playground in Cleveland. After a year-long "investigation" led by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty, a grand jury announced on December 28 that charges would not be brought against the officers responsible for Tamir's death.

The Rice family is calling on the Department of Justice to step in to both investigate the case and to hold the prosecutor and the officers accountable for their actions.

Attorney General Lynch,

In response to the December 28 announcement that a grand jury in Cleveland will not indict the officers responsible for the death of Tamir Rice, the Rice family is calling for the Department of Justice to get involved. The family’s specific demands are: 1) the firing of both officers involved in Tamir’s death, 2) a federal investigation by the Department of Justice of Prosecutor Tim McGinty and his removal from office, and 3) a federal investigation by the Department of Justice into the killing of Tamir.

No mother should have to make these demands. No family should have to endure a year of accusations against them by the very same prosecutor who is supposed to be overseeing the case against these officers. No children should have to wonder, “Am I next?”

We're calling on you and the Department of Justice to step in on their behalf and to investigate Tamir's death. As Mrs. Rice has said, " I don't want my child to have died for nothing and I refuse to let his legacy or his name be ignored. We will continue to fight for justice for him, and for all families who must live with the pain that we live with."
