Don't Axe the RSRT

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

The big end of town, who pocket massive bonuses off the backs of transport workers being forced to drive too long, too fast and in dodgy vehicles, has launched a full scale attack on the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal which was set up to save lives. Each year around 330 people are killed in truck crashes and thousands more are injured. Decades of research has shown that a root cause of deaths and injuries on our roads is the economic squeeze companies like Coles puts on transport workers. Despite this, Employment Minister Michaelia Cash has announced she will do the bidding of big transport operators by axing the Tribunal so they won’t be required to pay what they should for transporting their freight.

Instead of working with truck drivers and the transport industry to reduce the hundreds of fatal truck crashes on our roads each year, Employment Minister Michaelia Cash is doing the bidding of big transport operators like Coles so they can avoid paying truck drivers a safe rate. This will put my safety at risk, my family’s safety at risk, and the safety of everyone on our roads at risk.

By plotting to bring forward legislation that axes the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal, Minister Cash and the Government will be taking the side of billion dollar operators like Coles and shonky operators. Prime Minister Turnbull, you need to act before it's too late.

As a voter I ask you to pledge that:
- The Government will reverse the plan to remove the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal,
- The Government will help save lives on our roads by making sure clients pay safe rates for the movement of their freight,
- Every Liberal Party MP will refuse donations from Coles or Wesfarmers until they put community safety ahead of their profits and executive bonuses.
