End Food Poverty in Leeds
Leeds City Council
Food poverty has been on the rise. Many in our community are struggling to access basic necessities. The Young Communist League in West Yorkshire have created a list of innovative demands that, if met by Leeds City Council, would solve this problem once and for all in Leeds. So let’s make our voices heard and demand that our council take decisive action to end food poverty now!

Food poverty is not a natural fact but a political choice. From 2020-2021, over 150,000 emergency food parcels were given out to those in need, across the city.1 This is not good enough. Though the work foodbanks do is essential in supporting our communities, their existence is a recognition of the failure of the council to take concrete action preventing the extreme emergency of food poverty. Therefore we are demanding that:
The council set up and run a scheme to reduce food waste from big monopoly supermarkets.
The council should run a fresh food pantry where people struggling to afford basic items, will be guaranteed access to the food they need each week at a low price.
The council should provide services to ensure that all children eligible for free school meals have access to three nutritional meals a day.
The council should extend school holiday meal schemes to ensure that all children that are eligible for free school meals have access to three healthy meals each day of the school holidays.
The council should set up a renewable smart farming scheme where the produce is sold in the food deserts across the city, (Leeds 044 MLSOA, in North-East Headingley, for example) at affordable prices.
