End NM’s Methane Waste & Pollution Now!

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham

New Mexico has a methane waste and pollution problem. It’s not only ruining our air and harming our climate, it’s also costing us millions of dollars that would otherwise go toward purchasing text books, technology, and other resources for our classrooms. New Mexico’s land, air and water are a cherished part of our heritage, and we have a moral obligation to protect them. We need to hold oil and gas companies accountable with commonsense methane and air pollution rules that protect air quality and our climate. A state methane rule is a win-win that reduces pollution, increases funding for education, and encourages job creation in New Mexico’s growing methane mitigation industry.

I support your directive to end the wasteful venting, leaking, and flaring of methane gas that’s associated with oil and gas production. I know that work has begun on rulemaking, including the scheduling of stakeholder meetings. But, as you know, time is of the essence.

In the last four years, New Mexico has produced HALF of the nation’s methane waste on federal and tribal lands. Yet, 93 percent of this waste was AVOIDABLE. Not only has this fouled the air our children breathe, but it’s also robbed their schools of much-needed revenue for books, technology, and other resources. We can’t allow this to continue!

I urge you to ensure that draft regulations are issued before your first year in office comes to an end.

Thank you.
