End the Filibuster: Don’t let these Republicans dominate the Senate

U.S. Senate

This is shameful: after a violent insurrection that put their colleagues in mortal danger, Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans would rather cover for Donald Trump than get real answers for the American people.

Recently, a bipartisan House majority voted to establish an independent, 9/11-style commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection. But despite the immense support for this investigation from constituents and legislators alike, some Senate Republicans are threatening to filibuster the bill -- and stop it from even getting a fair up-or-down vote.

That’s outrageous -- the American people deserve to get answers, feel safe, and know that everything that possibly could be done to prevent another attack like this has been done. Plus, this isn’t the only extremely popular bill that Republicans are threatening to filibuster…

The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1), which would protect our freedom to vote and stop states from playing partisan games with their election laws, also passed the House and is headed to the Senate floor. But McConnell has called blocking it his “top priority” -- and is committed to abusing the filibuster to do just that.

It seems that these Republicans have made their backward priorities clear: party over country, Trump over democracy, and obstruction over progress.

Investigating an insurrection and ensuring the freedom to vote shouldn’t be controversial or partisan issues -- and they shouldn’t be issues that a small, partisan group of senators can block. Sign this petition to urge the Senate to immediately abolish the filibuster.

On January 6th, people around the world watched in horror as a violent, racist mob launched a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. Now, Congress has a duty to ensure this never happens again -- but Mitch McConnell and other GOP senators are threatening to block congressional action by abusing the filibuster.

We cannot let these self-interested politicians shut down overwhelmingly popular bills -- and put partisan politics before the safety and wellbeing of the American people. We demand that the Senate eliminate the filibuster, so our elected officials can get to work on the issues that matter.
