Five people hold a yellow sign in front of the Federal Building. The larger sign says: "As of January 22 2021 Nuclear weapons are illegal - the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons bans the development, test, production, manufacture, acquisition,

Citizens in Bellingham are deeply concerned about the grave threat that nuclear weapons pose to communities throughout the world. We firmly believe that our residents have the right to live in a world free from this threat. Any use of nuclear weapons, whether deliberate or accidental, would have catastrophic, far-reaching consequences for people and the environment. Therefore, we support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and call on our government to sign and ratify it. Sixty Two countries have ratified the Treaty to date.

We are asking Bellingham to urge our national leaders to pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. In a logical and step process: Renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first. End the sole authority of any US President to launch a nuclear attack. Take US nuclear weapons off hair trigger alert. Cancel the plan to replace the entire US arsenal with enhanced weapons at trillions of dollars that can be used in peaceful and healthful ways for our people and the planet.
