Expand the Community Ambassador Program in District 5
Mayor London Breed
This petition demands Mayor Breed commit to funding 10 new Community Ambassadors in District 5 by May 15, 2021
We believe that ensuring public safety in our neighborhoods requires community-based solutions that work with neighbors, visitors, small businesses and other stakeholders to ensure safety for all communities. We need to expand the Community Ambassador program.
The Community Ambassador Program provides a visible presence to assist residents, visitors, and businesses, and promote safety, with trained city workers who act as a helpful presence on the streets, provide information and referrals, offer general assistance, and report hazards and emergencies to city agencies. The program, which has been successfully piloted in six San Francisco neighborhoods, originated in 2010 in response to an increase in violent crime, particularly against the Asian-American community in San Francisco.
On February 24th in response to growing neighborhood support for non-police public safety programs, Supervisor Dean Preston sent a letter to Mayor Breed urging her to partner on a pilot to expand the Community Ambassador Program by adding at least 10 Community Ambassadors throughout neighborhoods of District 5. Initial cost estimates from the program Director indicate an approximate budget ask of $500,000 for this program. The Mayor has not responded to this request.
The pilot presents a cost-effective way to improve public safety while fulfilling a shared city goal of diverting funds from traditional policing models.
San Francisco has an opportunity to lead the way in promoting public safety by expanding the Community Ambassador program. We demand a $500,000 allocation in the Mayor's budget to expand the Community Ambassador Program in District 5 this year.
