Extend the 20mph speed limit on Quernmore Road

Cllr Keith Iddon, Lancashire County Council

Quernmore Road is very dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife in the area where drivers speed up after leaving the 20mph speed limit zone. This is a busy road and with parked cars at weekends, is reduced to a single lane for vehicle traffic. The 20mph speed limit zone should be extended to the end of the urban area beyond the Coop supermarket.

We are writing to ask that you put in place measures to extend the 20mph speed limit on Quernmore Road from where it currently ends at the grammar school up to the edge of the urban area beyond the Coop.

Quernmore Road is very dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife in the area where drivers speed up after leaving the 20mph speed limit zone. This is a busy road and with parked cars at weekends, it is reduced to a single lane for vehicle traffic.

This stretch of road includes one of the major entrances to Williamson Park, and an area where many people cross between the park and the cemetery. Alongside its use by people, it's also a vital crossing for wildlife, yet roadkill is an all too familiar sight to those who use it.

It's especially dangerous for cyclists at night, when drivers often substantially exceed the 30mph speed limit currently in place.

Let's not wait until there's a serious accident, let's take action now.

We believe the 20mph speed limit zone should be extended to the end of the urban area beyond the Coop supermarket and are asking you, as cabinet member for Highways and Transport, to put in place the measures for this to happen.
