CSU Chancellor Garcia: We demand a fair contract for CSU faculty

CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia

Despite faculty's best efforts to bargaining in good faith, management has shown little interest in meeting any of our proposals. We know our students deserve better, and our proposals show them a path to becoming a CSU we can all be proud of.

As a member of the California State University community, I am calling on you to reach an agreement for a fair contract with CSU faculty. You can prevent the faculty strike on December 4-7, which will impact thousands of students and faculty.

Faculty have been in contract negotiations with CSU management since May 2023, your negotiators have rejected faculty proposals and have shown little interest in moving towards a contract. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions.

It is difficult for faculty to show up fully to teach when their wages do not keep up with the ever increasing cost of living in California, when Lecturers teach the majority of the classes but earn considerably less than their K-12 educators, when the class sizes continue to expand, when faculty spend an increasing amount of time providing mental health support to students because administrators refuse to adequately staff Counseling centers, and when new faculty parents are forced back to campus without adequate time for parental leave. To ensure that faculty are fully supported, I call on you to demonstrate bold leadership by bargaining in good faith and coming to an agreement on a fair contract.
