#FreeSawLin from prison in Myanmar

Myanmar's Military Forces & Embassies around the World

On March 23, 2021, Saw Lin Htet was driving home in his hometown Hpa An (Myanmar) with his four-year old daughter, when he was accosted, arrested, and detained without a warrant by Myanmar security forces. Under the current coup, Burmese police abuse their power to stop civilians in the street, kidnap activists, and raid homes to search them for anti-government propaganda; specifically, relating to the fight of pro-democracy protestors for equal justice.

The military accused the papers in Saw Lin’s possession to be inciting violence against the state under the 505 Law: slander of government and spreading disinformation about the State. This law is weaponized and used to silence activists in their plight for justice. As for Saw Lin, he has been one of many taken into custody arbitrarily.

The initial report on this case by Shape-SEA’s, an Institute for Peace research, states that he has not been granted access to a lawyer and that no one has been in contact with him since his arrest. His wife has attempted to locate him to request his release and deliver his tuberculosis medicine, but has been unable to identify where he is being held and has not received confirmation that he has received his medicine.

To many, Saw Lin is a friend, but he is also father, a husband, and a student studying human rights in the Asia Pacific, trying to impact sustainable change and development in the region. His family, colleagues, friends, and allies around the globe demand his release to his family immediately upon his trial on April 6th. We encourage surrounding ASEAN countries to put pressure on the Myanmar government, military regime, and coup for Saw Lin’s immediate release in the name of his fundamental human rights.
