Get Rid of Automatic Textbook Billing at Rutgers University

Rutgers University

The time to vote on automatic textbook billing for Rutgers University has come! This is our final push to let the University know that we would like the power to pick and purchase our own course materials. The  automatic text book bill is a complicated opt-out process that most students aren't even aware of. Pass along this message, and the petition, to any Rutgers students. If you'd like to share a personal story with the Student Affairs board, make note. We need all the voices we can get!

Dear Student Affairs at Rutgers New Brunswick,

Textbook prices are out of control. Since the 70s, the price of textbooks has risen more than a thousand percent- that’s four times faster than the rate of inflation. Rutgers students have been struggling to afford their textbooks each semester, at the price of $500, or more.

I support a plan to get rid of the automatic textbook bill completely- and instead promote, and reinvest in Open and Affordable Textbook resources (OATS.) Students should be able to have full autonomy over where and how they’re purchasing their textbooks, as long as they have the materials necessary to make them successful. Professors should have the resources to provide more affordable textbook options for their students.

Sincerely,
