Give adjuncts fair access to unemployment benefits

U.S. Department of Labor

Sign this petition to join me and members of the international unions and advocacy organizations representing adjunct faculty in asking the U.S. Department of Labor to give adjuncts fair access to unemployment benefits.

Two summers ago, we asked the Labor Department to clarify that the unemployment eligibility rules written for primary and secondary teachers don’t apply to college and university adjuncts, who have no reasonable expectation of re-employment from year to year. We haven’t heard a word of response since.

It’s been 458 days—too long to wait for an answer from the Labor Department, when every paycheck is stretched so thin and, too often, arrives late.

Clarify for state unemployment agencies that college and university adjunct instructors are eligible for unemployment benefits during summer breaks as they have no reasonable expectation of re-employment in the next academic year.
