I signed a petition on Action Network telling Governor Tom Wolf to Governor Wolf: Defend Workers and Our Families, Veto HB1170.

We are immigrant workers, who day after day wake up and set out to build our roads, our homes, our schools, our hospitals.   We demolish, we repair, we maintain every town and city across this commonwealth. We have families who depend on us. We have dreams for our children and their children. We deserve safety, dignity and respect. Some of us have just arrived in this country with dreams of building a life here, while so many others of us have been here for decades fighting for relief, a relief that has not come. We lack immigration status not because we want to, but because the laws have not allowed us to.  They say we are “illegal” while saying nothing of an economy that would collapse without our supposedly “unauthorized” labor. How cruel is that? HB1170 targets us and our families who represent 15% of the workforce in the construction industry nationwide. If this bill becomes law, it will require the use of Everify across the industry.  We will struggle more to provide for our families, our safety will be further compromised and our conditions at work will worsen.  We are not a problem, we part of the solution! No more political games! Unity, solutions and respect now! Solutions for Pennsylvania workers and our families: Legal status and full citizenship for immigrant families will help ensure workers have access to stable jobs and are free from the threat of removal and separation from family. Reforms to our immigration system that prioritize citizenship for our families is good for workers and good for the industries that we support. Labor protections and access to unions for undocumented workers is how we take on exploitation and wage suppression; it is how we ensure the highest standards of safety across our industry . We do not want to struggle to make ends meet.  We do not want to do dangerous work without proper protection or training nor with little recourse when we get injured. Workers in our industry need each other and are stronger when we work together.   Global trade policies that support union organizing across borders strengthens our voice and power as workers in Pennsylvania. Our unity and solidarity must match the global nature of the economy that we are part of.   Governor Wolf must veto HB1170 and work to support federal and state policies that lift up all workers and protects all families!                                                    *********ESPANOL********* Somos los trabajadores inmigrantes que día tras día nos despertamos y construimos nuestras carreteras, hogares, escuelas, y hospitales. Derribamos, reparamos, y mantenemos todos los pueblos y ciudades del estado de Pensilvania. Tenemos familias que dependen de nosotros. Tenemos sueños para nuestros hijos y sus hijos. Merecemos seguridad, dignidad y respeto. Algunos de nosotros apenas hemos llegado a este país con sueños de construir vidas, y muchos más hemos estado por décadas luchando y esperando alivios para nuestras familias, alivios que no han llegado. Faltamos estatus migratorio, no porque queramos, sino porque las leyes no nos lo han permitido. Dicen que somos “ilegales” sin decir nada sobre una economía que caerá sin nuestra mano de obra supuestamente “no autorizada”. ¿Que tipo de juego cruel es eso? HB1170 es un ataque a nosotros y a nuestras familias que representamos 15% de todos los trabajadores de la industria de construcción nacionalmente.  Esta propuesta requiere el uso de Everify para toda la industria de construcción.  Si este propuesta se convierte en ley, lucharemos más para mantener a nuestras familias, nuestra seguridad será comprometida aún más y nuestras condiciones en el trabajo empeorarán. No somos un problema - ¡somos parte de la solución! ¡No más juegos políticos! ¡Soluciones, respeto y unión ahora! Soluciones para la industria de construcción y nosotros trabajadores incluyen: Estatus legal y la ciudadanía plena para las familias inmigrantes asegurará que trabajadores tengan acceso a trabajos estables y estén libres de la amenaza de deportación y separación de la familia. Las reformas a nuestro sistema de inmigración que priorizan la ciudadanía para nuestras familias son buenas para los trabajadores y buenas para las industrias que apoyamos. La protección laboral y el acceso a los sindicatos para los trabajadores indocumentados es la forma en que superamos la explotación y la supresión salarial. Apoyo para tratos de comercio globales que apoya a los sindicatos tras fronteras fortalecen nuestra voz y poder como trabajadores. Nuestra unidad y solidaridad deben coincidir con las condiciones globales de la economía de la que somos parte. Gobernador Wolf tiene que vetar este proyecto de ley HB1170 y apoyar las iniciativas federales y estatales que eleva y protege a todos los trabajadores y todas las familias en nuestro estado.
