Help Keep Rockford Public Library Safe!

The Rockford Library Board of Directors

Rockford Public Library has reopened. More than 80 percent of frontline staff have raised concerns about a lack of safety measures, but so far library leaders have not made the necessary changes. Add your name to this letter to RPL leaders: Help keep Rockford Public Library Safe!

We are writing as concerned area residents about improper safety precautions at the Rockford Public Library. We know that a strong functioning library is an essential part of any community. We also know that a key factor in what makes a library great is an engaged and empowered staff.

That’s why we were disappointed to hear that even after a strong majority of the frontline staff, who are represented by AFSCME Local 3350, have expressed concerns to you about a lack of safety precautions, you have thus far refused to act on their concerns.

Of course, if the environment is not safe for staff, it is not safe for patrons either. Though we understand the desire to reopen the library as quickly as possible, we think the library should emphasize the safety and health of patrons and staff above all else.

We call on the leadership of Rockford Public Library to immediately address the concerns of its hardworking staff. Specifically, we urge you to:

• Install plexiglass shields for the circulation desks.
• Provide an adequate amount of face shields for all staff tasked with interacting with the public.
• Provide disposable sanitation wipes to clean down surfaces and prevent the spread of contaminants.
• Tape off segments in 6-foot intervals to promote social distancing.
• Place limits on how many patrons per square foot and how long they can remain in the library.
