Ever wonder why HCJ has staffing problems? It's simple. 80% of the people in Harris County Jail have a mental health indicator and need access to health care as opposed to incarceration. Guards in Harris County Jail are in over their heads. Our friends and family in jail need doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists, not jail guards and isolation.
Our legal system refuses to take an individualized approach to addressing harm. The police arrest anyone they can; the DA intake system is flawed and accepts too many cases that are often later dismissed. While that end of the system causes more harm than help, HCSO can't keep up with staffing ratios to ensure the safety of those in its "care." Just this August, Dianna Williams lost her life due to inadequate access to life-saving medical care. Dianna is not the only one; she is the 7th person this year to lose their life while in custody at Harris County Jail.

We must break free from the harmful cycle of mass incarceration and advocate for reforms that bring our people home, where they belong.
The time for change is now. We cannot allow Harris County to continue perpetuating this cycle of mass incarceration. It will take bold leadership to break away from this harmful path and focus on real solutions that make the community safe, such as community-based ecosystems that address housing and food insecurities, drug and mental health concerns, education, and employment access. Resourced communities are safe communities. With the election approaching, your vote can help make the legal system more just. Sign our petition to pledge to vote your voice!
