It's Time For DC Statehood

Congress

Because DC doesn’t have statehood, we trust the federal government to be a good partner. On January 6th, we became hostage to it.

While many questions remain unanswered, one thing is certain: The denial of the mayor’s request to activate the National Guard left the protection of the nation’s capital at the whims of the same Republican extremists who encouraged white supremacists to storm the capitol.

After the failed insurrection, DC statehood is not only the right thing for District residents, this is a community safety imperative. Washington, DC is predominately Black, and home to more than 705,000 people who are currently taxed without any federal representation. We are denied a say in federal affairs and are often subjected to the whims of Congress. It is past time for DC to become a state.

The silencing of DC’s elected officials cannot continue. It puts District residents at risk. It puts the nation at risk. It’s time for DC to become the nation’s 51st state.

Washington, DC is home to more than 705,000 people who are taxed without any federal representation while subsequently denied a say in federal affairs and too often subjected to the whims of Congress.

The failed insurrection on January 6th and the denial of National Guard safety that had to go through a president more concerned with holding onto power than the safety of his citizens has made it clear that this can no longer continue. It’s time for DC to become the nation’s 51st state.

Not only for the security of the District but for the integrity of our nation.
