IUSG Carbon Neutrality Petition
IU Board of Trustees
We are graduating into a world that is increasingly affected by the climate crisis. Every year the intensity and scale of natural disasters worsen and the quality of our air and water is degraded. If concrete action is not taken, Indiana temperatures are expected to rise by 5 to 6°F by 2050.
Indiana University claims to prepare us for our futures, but the university threatens that same future with their lack of action regarding climate change; not only are they contributing to the crisis, they also have no plan of neutralizing their impacts. The Indiana Promise states, “I will take personal responsibility for what I say and do.” We must hold the University to its own standards of accountability when it comes to the climate crisis, especially given that 313,831 tons of greenhouse gases were emitted in the 2018-2019 term alone.
Within the next two weeks, we will demand a commitment to carbon neutrality from the Board of Trustees. This plan has the support of all IU campus student governments, as well as multiple student organizations. By signing this petition, you will be telling Indiana University that you demand the university keep its promise to take responsibility for their emissions.
We demand that IU join the growing list of institutions committed to the future of this planet, including Arizona State, the University of Florida, Duke University, Boston University, Queen’s University, UCLA, and Oregon State University, by achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.
