Justice For Sara Doe

Brown University

Sara Doe is a Brown University student who was suspended for protecting her bodily autonomy while being physically abused and assaulted by EMTs. She was tranquilized, forced onto the ground, stepped on, and handcuffed. Doe, a trauma survivor, bit an EMT in the process of being involuntarily hospitalized.

As a result, Doe was suspended from Brown. She is expected to finish her last semester without receiving her diploma and re-enroll in the fall so that the suspension can take effect. Furthermore, Doe has been left with a bill for “restitution” that she must pay to the EMT who assaulted her while also dealing with a felony charge.

We demand Justice for Sara Doe.

We demand Justice for Sara Doe.

To hold Sara Doe responsible for perpetuating harm while simultaneously disregarding the harm perpetuated by Brown University EMS and EMTs, the student conduct process, and the university itself, is severely misguided and a grave injustice. Sara Doe was and is a victim, who acted well within the anticipated and expected frameworks of how a trauma survivor may behave when having their consent and autonomy violated.

We seek justice for Sara Doe and demand Brown University:

1) Revoke Sara Doe’s suspension
2) Grant Sara Doe her diploma in May 2020
3) Remove the obligation to pay restitution
4) Adopt a mandatory annual mental health training for all incoming EMTs led by a Disability Justice organization

We demand that Brown University hold itself accountable for the failure of Sara Doe's case and take appropriate action to rectify this injustice.
