Keep the Sheep

Mongomery County Park and Planning

There have been sheep on the field at Old Mill Farm, at the corner of Query Mill and Turkey Foot Road, for over 60 years and now the county wants them moved. The County had purchased the field from the previous owner by eminent domain yet we have been good stewards of the land and taken care of the sheep that were already there when we moved to the farm 20 years ago. The flock dwell on a heritage site, the original site of the Query Mill which was built in the late 17th century. We would like to preserve this historic site and the animals which have lived there. This is a part of history which is rapidly being forgotten and being replaced by mega mansions.

In this case, MNCPPC has told us that all of the sheep must be removed and intend to keep the field as open space. The land is not suitable for anything as it is in a flood plane and there is no plan to maintain the historic barn. We have maintained the land and the historic barn and would like to continue to preserve piece of rural history. We have been trying to negotiate with the County to no avail and are being forced to remove the sheep. Please sign this petition to let our County know that you want them to work with Old Mill Farm to help preserve this little piece of history.

I feel strongly that Montgomery County should work with Old Mill Farm to allow them to continue to maintain the sheep and historic barn at Turkey Foot and Query Mill. This is an important part of our community and we believe the agricultural use and history should be preserved.
