Fossil Free Referendum

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian O'Connor and the Griffith University Council

In order to avoid the worst impacts on Climate Change we must leave 80% of fossil fuel reserves in the ground, we need Griffith University to send the fossil fuel industry a message that they can not get away with wrecking the climate

Griffith University prides itself on it’s sustainable leadership yet continues to invest in fossil fuels, we need Griffith to take the next step and divest.

The burning of fossil fuels is driving climate change, impacts of which are already being felt around the world. Do you think that Griffith University should exclude fossil fuels from current and future investments to show climate leadership and protect our future?

Globally we are seeing the ever increasing impacts of climate change. We have been seeing severe droughts, floods and an increase in cyclones while 2014 was the hottest year ever recorded. Despite scientific consensus of anthropogenic warming and the urgency to act, fossil fuels are still being extracted and burnt. Climate Change threatens the future of all Griffith’s students as well as its sustainability legacy.

It is known that in order to stay below the political goal of 2 degrees of warming we must move beyond fossil fuels and leave at least 80% of the current reserves in the ground. Institutions with any level of investment must divest their investments in fossil fuels in order to avoid the worst impacts on climate change. Divestment sends a clear financial and social message to the fossil fuel industry that they can not continue to burn and extract fossil fuels to wreck the climate. While our government is being too slow to act our institutions must take the lead.

Griffith University, despite having a sustainable reputation and having sustainability as one of it’s core values is still likely to have millions of dollars invested in fossil fuels through a fund manager. Griffith University truely has been a leader in environment and sustainability but we are asking them to take one extra step.

We are calling on griffith university to stand up and be the sustainability leader it claims to be by introducing a policy to exclude fossil fuels from its investments.
