Let Kids Have the Freedom to Read

Horry County Schools

We believe that our kids deserve access to books and that their parents are the ones to make the decision on what is and isn't appropriate for them to read. Strangers don't get to dictate what someone else's child can and cannot read, or can and cannot have access to. Censorship has no place in public schools.

The fact is, Horry County schools already had opt-out forms and a process in place for parents to make sure their preferences were honored.

That wasn't enough for this extremist group of right-wing book banners, they want to go even further and remove books they don't agree with -- forever.

Kids learn how to be a critical thinker throughout school, and that won't happen if we have people determined to restrict access to information.

Thank you for heeding the call to serve all the students and families of Horry County Schools. We realize you serve a diverse group of parents, and appreciate that you have put processes in place to ensure that every parent can monitor their own child's reading. We urge you not to let the rights of a parent who prefers limited access to books usurp the rights of a parent who believes in the freedom to read. To further transparency, we request that the district publicize book challenges on the district website. This would allow all parents to know which books may be taken away from their children and advocate for their parental rights.
