Loyola, Listen to Your Youth Activists!

Loyola University Chicago Administration

The Loyola Administration has not fully committed to improve the wellbeing of its community or uphold its Jesuit values. More must be done to champion the care for self, others, and community. "Together in Loyola", we must cooperate to ensure that the Loyola Community thrives.

Dear Loyola Administration,

In light of the 2021 Climate Change Conference, we are holding you accountable for your claims to celebrate youth activism. It is not enough to acknowledge youth activism--listen to and follow through with your own activists on campus.

The Sunrise Movement recognizes the intersection between environmental and social justice issues. Sunrise’s Principle 10 is “We unite with other movements for change.” As Sunrise LUC, we uplift the existing demands from student organizations, including the Student Government of Loyola Chicago, Student Environmental Alliance, Students for Food Sovereignty, Our Streets LUC, The Black Cultural Center, and the Loyola University Chicago Graduate Workers Union. The Loyola Administration must implement the following:

1. Source 100% renewable energy by 2025.
2. Completely divest from fossil fuels by July 2022; reinvest in socially and environmentally responsible companies and the Rogers Park and Edgewater communities.
3. Terminate the dining contract with Aramark and partner with an ethical food provider while protecting current dining service employees.
4. Restructure Campus Safety to serve the Loyola Community and become completely independent of CPD.
5. Diversify Loyola’s faculty, administration, and student support service staff; expand resources for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ staff and faculty.
6. Transparency in all university initiatives and investments. Publish plans and updates, and include students in the process.

You have not fully committed to improve the wellbeing of the Loyola Community or support our Jesuit values. You must do more than you have to champion the care for self, others, and community.

Together in Loyola,

Sunrise Movement LUC
