Make Textbooks Affordable!

UC Regents

The cost of college is incredibly high, and yet according to the College Board students also have to pay around a thousand dollars a year on textbooks. Textbook prices have increased at over four times the rate of inflation because of the price-hiking tactics of the publishing industry.

Open textbooks provide an immediate solution. These textbooks are published under an open license so they are FREE!

We're calling on the UC Regents to establish a grant program to incentivize faculty to use open textbooks.

Similar grant programs have saved students millions of dollars at other university systems. Let's bring open textbooks to our UC classes and help fight the cost of college!

Dear UC Regents

Textbooks are too expensive.

According to the College Board students pay around a thousand dollars a year on textbooks. Textbook prices have ballooned at over four times the rate of inflation in recent years due to lack of competition in the textbook industry.

Open textbooks provide an immediate solution. They’re written by professionals in the field and peer reviewed, like traditional textbooks, but published under an open copyright which means they’re shareable, modifiable, and free to read

The UC’s provide an excellent opportunity to showcase open textbooks. As one of the top ranking and the largest public university systems in the country, you can make a large scale impact on the prestige and impact of open textbooks.

So we're calling on you to support a system-wide grant to incentivize open textbooks across the UCs and support faculty who wish to make the transition!
