Make the ‘fire break’ lockdown effective - aim toward zero Covid

The Welsh Government

The People’s Assembly Wales believes that is it possible to aim toward zero Covid saving lives and livelihoods. We need to stop blaming our neighbours and colleagues for spreading the infection and instead unite to make sure that the UK government holds themselves totally responsible and are forced to put people’s lives and not profits first. The current on/off drift of policies toward the Covid pandemic is costing lives and livelihoods - it cannot continue. We believe with the political will to drive toward zero Covid and with the required financial support so that no one suffers financially or in any other way, the Welsh Government could make a big step toward controlling the effects of the virus as in New Zealand. Our four immediate demands are supported widely and recommended by the scientific community and are further expanded in out ‘aiming toward Zero Covid’ People’s Assembly set of demands on the Welsh Government: https://pawalescymru.blogspot.com/2020/10/peoples-assembly-wales-fight-for-lives.html

The People's Assembly Wales proposes that in the 'fire break' lockdown starting 23.10.2020 that the Welsh Government change their anti Covid strategy to prioritise the following four points building on the Senedd resolution of 21.10.2020 which includes proposals “...to plan and implement a new set of interventions based on a Zero Covid/elimination strategy...”:

1) Stop all classroom or F2F teaching in schools or universities during the lockdown;

2) Continue to maintain the ‘fire break’ lockdown with protection of jobs and incomes (including
furlough and support for the self employed) until there is a downward trend in cases;

3) Demand funding from Westminster to enable Welsh Government to provide this protection;

4) Use the time gained to build effective Find, Test, Trace, Isolate, Support across the whole of Wales.
