Nike, Respect Garment Workers in Indonesia!

mark.parker@nike.com, ernie.rose@nike.com

In a a matter of months, Nike intends to pull a mass majority of production from Indonesian garment factories. Workers have battled long and hard for union rights, good pay and stable work in these factories, and nearly 30,000 workers and their families are at risk of losing everything.
In 2016,  Nike was exposed for corruption and bribery of Athletics Kenya officials . In the summer of 2018,  women employees at Nike pulled back the covers on severe gender discrimination and sexual harassment in their very own headquarters. And now, after decades of Nike producing in Indonesia, there are 29,567 workers who will soon no longer be able to provide for their families. The mass majority of workers sewing Nike apparel are Muslim women of color. To proceed with the company’s decision to pull production from factories where decades of union organizing has secured women workers with a voice at the table and stable work is to sustain a pattern of Nike's negligence towards women.

History shows the harmful impact left behind by irresponsible suppliers in the industry when they remove production and a steady source of income for dozens of communities. As a company that hit revenues of 36 billion in 2018 alone, there is no excuse for undermining the unions of the global working class.

Dear Mr. Parker,

We urge you to reverse your decision to pull apparel production from union factories in Indonesia.

In solidarity with thousands of workers in Indonesia, we urge you to comply with their following demands.

We ask Nike maintain apparel production in Indonesia, and do whatever it takes to ensure Nike remains a responsible investor in order to maintain production from factories with a recognized union.

We ask Nike immediately cease encouraging suppliers or unions to recommend voluntary resignations or transfers to other factories, as union members feel this is coercion.

We ask Nike ensures prices that permit any Nike supplier that moves to a new location to pay the same rate of wage as in their prior location.

We ask Nike guarantee distribution of full severance to all workers laid off as a result of your withdrawal, including those who have already left impacted suppliers.
