(Le français s'en suit)

The latest provocation of the Kanien'kehà:ka of Kanehsatà:ke by the Oka municipality attempts to reappropriate the pines, the site of the 1990 siege, as a settler colonial site.

This proposition, advanced on the 19th of October 2020, signals the Oka municipality's refusal to change. It is one of many instances of systemic racism against Indigenous peoples in Canada recently.

The motivations of the Oka municipality, written in the text's proposition, are historical, identity, and landscape. The history cited is not that of the Kanien'kehà:ka. The identity referred to is not that of the Kanien'kehà:ka. And to worsen things, the municipality refuses to acknowledge that this is unceded land. It insists, since 1990, to call these lands its own.

In 1990, the municipality wanted to cut down the forest. Today, it pretends to protect it. We conclude that this is not about the Pines, that the Oka municipality cannot come to terms with the rights of the Kanehsatà:ke community.

We are calling upon you to support the Rotinonhseshà:ka of Kanehsatà:ke in yet another fight against colonial aggression. We ask you to signal your disagreement with this systematic failure to respect Indigenous rights.

In signing this petition, you are joining the land defenders' email list, standing in solidarity with us, and we are grateful for it.

In signing this petition, I stand in support of the Kanehsatà:ke land defenders as they oppose the proposition of Bylaw 2020-223 that seeks to make the Oka Pine Forest into a cultural heritage site.
I refuse to condone the blatant disregard for Indigenous land rights and the systemic racism embedded in the Oka municipality.
I ask all involved to prevent this land seizure from going through and take a step toward peace and toward justice.
