No Labor for Collaborators

Law Firms

The Trump administration has been trampling on the rule of law, and the institutions with the power to resist it are instead falling in line to protect their bottom lines. Some major law firms have been no exception, giving in to outrageous, lawless demands at the expense of our historically marginalized colleagues.

As the future of the legal profession, who have committed to defending the rule of law, we cannot stand for this capitulation to tyranny. Join law students from across the country pledging to withhold your labor from any firm that gives in to Trump administration demands regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion or the types of cases handled by the firm.

Our democracy is under attack, and it is time for lawyers to choose sides. As the future of the legal profession, who have committed to defending the rule of law, we cannot stand for capitulation to tyranny.

Since the start of the administration, Donald Trump has completely disregarded the rule of law, issuing blatantly unconstitutional orders and intimidating our institutions into compliance. Now he has his sights set on BigLaw, threatening punishment against firms for supporting diversity in the legal profession and for representing clients disfavored by the administration.

The response from most firms has been either silence or collaboration, committing to the elimination of diversity programs and openly agreeing set amounts of money in pro bono work to support Trump's lawless agenda.

We, the undersigned, refuse to work for any firm that gives in to Trump administration demands regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion or the types of cases handled by the firm. We will only seek or accept work for firms taking the following actions:

1) Joining an amicus brief in opposition to Trump's executive orders targeting law firms and lawyers,

2) Publicly refusing to audit or alter hiring practices that recognize the structural disadvantages that continue to prevent historically marginalized groups from entering the legal profession,

3) Publicly refusing to release personal information about firm employees or take any adverse action against employees in response to administration threats, and

4) Publicly committing to pro bono representation of individuals and groups targeted by the Trump administration.

Our democracy is at stake, and we refuse to be complicit.
