Niagara Bottling Wrong for Bloomfield

Bloomfield Mayor Joan Gamble, Town Council Members, Rep. David Baram, State Senators Bye and Coleman, Governor Malloy

TO PROTECT OUR WATER AND ENVIRONMENT, WE OPPOSE A NIAGARA BOTTLING PLANT IN BLOOMFIELD CT

Residents from across Bloomfield CT. and other MDC towns ask that:

1The Mayor and Town Council work with citizens to make the best economic development decisions. Protect our environment and keep our water local.

2. The Bloomfield Town Council rescind the $4.1 million tax abatement .

  • Niagara Bottling, a for-profit company from California, plans to make 2.6 million single-use plastic bottles of water per day at the Bloomfield plant and sell them for a profit.
  • A $4.1 million tax abatement was  hastily approved by the town without adequate opportunity for public review.
  • The MDC plans to sell 1.8 million gallons/day of our water to California based Niagara for less than they charge us.  And Niagara has plans to truck in spring water from other CT towns.
  • In case of a water shortage, there is no provision to prioritize water to residents over water to the bottling plant. , Residents will first be asked to conserve , while Niagara will still have access to 1.8 million gallons a day. We are at  present in a moderate drought and the future is unknown.
  • Most plastic water bottles are not recycled. They end up clogging landfills and ultimately littering the oceans, and harming birds, marine life and animals. There is a price to pay for both waste management and recycling.
  • Bottled water is no safer, and perhaps less safe than tap water due to weaker regulation
  • We'll have 200 extra trucks every day, polluting near a school and creating extra wear on our roads.
  • There is no guarantee that Bloomfield residents will get any of the 38 jobs.

NIAGARA BOTTLING IS WRONG FOR BLOOMFIELD AND ALL MDC TOWNS.

We are residents from across the town of Bloomfield CT.

We ask that:

1. The Bloomfield Town Council rescind the $4.1 million tax abatement that has been offered to Niagara Bottling Plant.

2. The Mayor and Town Council work with citizens to make the best decision to protect our water, environment and local control.

Niagara Bottling, a for-profit company from California, plans to make 2.6 million single-use plastic bottles of water per day at the Bloomfield plant and sell them for a profit.

The project was hastily reviewed without any opportunity for review by the public.

The town council has voted a $4.1 million tax break for Niagara and the MDC plans to sell our water to them for less than they charge us.

There is no provision to prioritize water to residents over water to the bottling plant. In case of a water shortage, residents will be asked to conserve but Niagara will have access to 1.8 million gallons a day. We are presently in a moderate drought and the future is unknown.

200 heavy trucks everyday polluting near a school , and wear on roads to be paid by citizens.

There is no guarantee that Bloomfield residents will get any of the few likely low-wage jobs.

Bottled water is no safer, and perhaps less safe than tap water because of weaker regulation.

Most plastic water bottles are not recycled. They end up clogging landfills and ultimately littering the oceans, and harming birds, marine life and animals.

NIAGARA BOTTLING IS WRONG FOR BLOOMFIELD AND ALL MDC TOWNS.

Please take immediate action.
