NSW Needs a Pay Rise

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian

Workers have been the heroes of the pandemic, but we have seen wages frozen, hours cut and co-workers or family lose work.

Wage freezes and pay cuts affect all of us. When workers have less money to keep up with the cost of living, it means less money is spent in local communities and small businesses.

NSW Government is making it tougher for workers

But the NSW Government is making pay rises harder for workers. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has frozen and capped the pay of 400,000 public sector workers in healthcare, public safety, education, social services and the trades.

The NSW Government is the largest employer in Australia - larger than any business. This means they're setting a standard of pay freezes and pay caps for all workers. We need the NSW Government to support a pay rise for all workers.

Business profits are up, but wages are low

The COVID-19 recession is the first in Australian history when business profits got bigger, not smaller.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, profits increased by 15% in the last 12 months. But wage growth over the year remained at a record low of 1.4 per cent.

That's 15% for business and 1.4% for workers.

Economic experts say pay rises essential to boost economic spending

Even the Reserve Bank of Australia is arguing for higher wages for workers, saying pay rises are needed to stimulate the economy.

Pay rises help workers provide for their families – but right now they are also necessary. When workers get a pay rise our communities flourish. Our increased spending creates jobs and supports other workers in our local community.

Fair pay rises will help us recover faster from the recession.

The Reserve Bank of Australia now says workers need a pay boost to stimulate the economy. Pay rises will increase spending, which increases economic activity and ultimately creates jobs.

It's time for you to support a pay rise for all workers.
