From Riverdale to Lindenwood, we all deserve to live in homes that are safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly. NYC's Local Law 97 mandates that we upgrade all of our buildings to meet the city and state's climate mandates, a move that will benefit current residents and future generations. As co-op owners, we are a substantial segment of middle-class homeowners in New York City, and we occupy a type of housing with different economics and engineering than single-family homes or single-owner apartment buildings. We need the city and state to implement programs to help us upgrade our buildings, address longstanding infrastructure deficits, and bring the benefits of Local Law 97 to all of us.

This petition lays out the basic platform we need to start this work: Tax abatements for very affordable buildings and a team at the Accelerator -- the city's building decarbonization office -- with expertise in co-op buildings. We could achieve this within a month if the city wanted to do it. It also calls on Mayor Adams to advocate at the state level for the scale of the policies we need, as the state's climate programs hinge upon successfully removing fossil fuels from our buildings.

We, the undersigned, are co-op shareholders who want to transition our buildings away from fossil fuels to renewable energy in order to comply with Local Law 97 and combat climate change. As co-op shareholders, we demand that you:

*Work with the City Council to authorize the “new J-51 program,” which grants tax abatements to affordable housing, and include capital projects assisting in decarbonization on the list of eligible programs that HPD creates;
*Designate at least 3 co-op navigators at the Accelerator who will provide co-op specific technical assistance on Local Law 97 compliance this year;
*Tell the state legislature that we want the New York State Solar Tax Credit, which raises the solar tax credit cap to $10,000 and makes the credit refundable for low-income and fixed-income homeowners;
*Go to Albany and demand large-scale state funding to help us electrify our homes, such as Bucks for Boilers (S9099).
