Our Unemployment Insurance

OH State Legislature

As Ohio’s unemployment insurance system grapples with insolvency, some lawmakers think working people are to blame.

During the 2016 session, HB 394 attempted to upend how benefits are received. The unemployment insurance period would have been reduced from 26 weeks to as few as 12 weeks, tying Florida and North Carolina for the shortest systems in the United States.

HB394 fell through, but we have to make sure these kinds of extreme bills never come up again. Tell your legislator to fix our flawed system — without hurting working people!

Our state Legislature needs to stop putting big corporations before working people. In May, a bill was passed to pay off Ohio’s unemployment debt to the federal government. The move saved employers hundreds of millions of dollars in tax penalties next year.

But what about working people? What about us having a system that can keep regular Ohioans afloat, without cutting benefits or plunging our state into debt? Our legislators must come up with a plan now.

Enough is enough. Send a letter urging them to take action.
