Pennsylvanians will not tolerate efforts to undermine our right to vote

Pennsylvania Legislature

The Supreme Court of the United States decided last night against hearing three cases that would disqualify over 10,000 Pennsylvania ballots -- meaning they won’t be second-guessing some of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s major pro-voter decisions.

In the months before the election, Common Cause Pennsylvania and our partners fought for an extended deadline for mail-in and absentee ballots -- an absolutely necessary reform amidst postal service slowdowns and processing delays, and one that was approved by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court before the election.

That should’ve been the end of it, but partisan politicians have spent months attempting to overturn our election, throw out lawfully-cast ballots, and strip Pennsylvanians of our right to vote -- all because they didn’t like the results of our free, fair election.

That’s why the Supreme Court’s decision last night to count all of these mail-in and absentee ballots was so crucial -- and it’s why we must continue to put pressure on our Legislature to put voting rights front-and-center this year.

ADD MY NAME: Our legislators should focus on making future elections more secure and accessible, rather than rolling back Pennsylvanians’ right to participate in our democracy.

Our right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, but Pennsylvania lawmakers have spent months focused on undermining that sacred right, attempting to pass voter suppression bills and shut down pro-voter reforms. These efforts are unacceptable: it’s our lawmakers’ job to advocate for every Pennsylvanian, regardless of whether they’re happy with the results of our election.
