Petition: Democracy Doesn't Pause

New York State Legislature

The government can’t stop working for the people in a time of crisis. Now more than ever, New Yorkers expect the government to stay in session and address the problems that we face.

The New York State Legislature needs to create remote systems and continue doing the people's business during this time of crisis — just like schools, organizations and business are doing. While legislators have taken the first steps toward remote voting, our lawmakers haven't signaled if they will stay in session and continue to introduce and pass laws, hold committee hearings, plan for recovery, and keep the public informed on issues under consideration as they are in process. Which means that for the time being, New York is being governed by executive order and opaque back-room dealings.

New York can’t rely on the governor to lead the state alone through Executive Orders and closed door meetings — we deserve an open and transparent legislative process that includes representatives of the people. Nothing about this situation is ideal, but democracy does not pause, it adapts.

We need our representatives to remain in session and stand up for New Yorkers as vital decisions are being made throughout this ongoing crisis on rent relief, housing issues, elections, supporting small businesses and social services, and protecting our most vulnerable.

TAKE ACTION!

Sign this petition to demand that your state legislators stay in session, working remotely — and be a co-equal branch of government representing us, the people. Leave a comment for your state legislator and let them know WHY you care.

The government can’t stop working for the people in a time of crisis. Now more than ever, New Yorkers expect the government to stay in session and address the problems that we face.

The New York State Legislature needs to create remote systems and continue doing the people's business during this time of crisis — just like schools, organizations and business are doing. If neighboring states like Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are making provisions for lawmakers to convene and vote remotely; then New York can too.

The Legislature is a co-equal branch of government that can not cede its role to the Executive, which is correctly triaging the current state of emergency. New York can’t rely on the governor to lead the state alone through Executive Orders and closed door meetings — we deserve an open and transparent legislative process that includes representatives of the people.

We demand that the New York State Legislature stays in session and continues to introduce and pass laws, hold committee hearings, plan for recovery, and keep the public informed on issues under consideration as they are in process.
