Petition for A Buckingham Community Rights Ordinance

Buckingham County Board of Supervisors

Buckingham is currently the target of the polluting metallic mining industry. We need our Board of Supervisors to protect us from the harms of these toxic operations. Please sign this petition to the Board to pass this ordinance that protects our right to be free from toxic trespass.

This bill declares:

  • The right and responsibility to make decisions locally to protect our communities.
  • The right and responsibility to protect ourselves and our water, air and land from toxic trespass, which we know industrial mining would bring.
  • The requirement for a metallic mining company to “Prove It First”. The company would first have to provide proof of at least one metallic mine that did not cause harm – inspired by past Wisconsin and pending Minnesota law.

When 1,000 signatures are gathered, the ordinance will be presented to the Buckingham Board of Supervisors to request passage into law.

**Please note: this petition is for residents and landowners in Buckingham County only.

We, the residents of Buckingham County, respectfully request the Board of Supervisors to enact and enforce this:

Ordinance Requiring an Assessment of the Compatibility of Metallic Mining with the Right to Freedom from Toxic Trespass.

Corporations have the right to stop us from trespassing on their property. We have the right and responsibility to self-governance and to protect our bodies, air, water and land from toxic trespass that the metallic mining industry would bring to the county. It’s up to us to claim that. In addition, mining companies should “Prove it First”: show us that sometime, somewhere, at least one metallic mine did not cause harm to human and natural communities.

Corporate profits must not take precedence over our health and safety.
