Petition Governor Newsom: Sign California's two essential climate disclosure bills!
California Governor Gavin Newsom
The legislature has passed two climate disclosure bills that—as a package—will be game-changers for the state and the nation's efforts to staunch climate change. We're asking everyone to sign our petition to Governor Newsom, urging him to sign both bills without delay. Scroll down to read the petition.
Please sign on! Governor Newsom must sign SB 253 and SB 261, together!
SB 261 (Stern), Greenhouse gases: climate-related financial risk requires companies doing more than $500 million ($500,000,000) in annual revenue to disclose their risk according to global disclosure standards. This information, made public biennially, will inform investors around the country and the world about the prudence of investing in banks and companies contributing to climate chaos.
SB 253 (Wiener), the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, requires companies with revenues exceeding $1billionto report all of their associated emissions, including "Scope 3" emissions, from products that are sold and used by consumers (think about Exxon's gas stations).
Both bills provide for civil penalties for non-compliance.
Sign the petition! Tell Governor Newsom the nation needs him to sign BOTH these bills.
Together, these two bills will pave the way for the federal Securities and Exchange Commission to finalize strong federal disclosure regulations, now under scathing attack from oil and gas interests (see below).
